Help me find Heirloom Strawberry Seeds

Hey everyone,

I ordered a bunch of heirloom seeds from Baker Creek and I am very happy with them and look forward to planting them here shortly. My wife was really excited when she saw they offered strawberry seeds and agreed to let me order a bunch of different seeds as long as she got some strawberry seeds.

Well Baker Creek sent me everything but the strawberry seeds and it seems they sold out of them.

I have been checking all around and I can't find any sites that still have them in stock. I see alot of the alpine/european strawberries but these are not what I am looking forward. Just some good old fashioned strawberry seeds.

If anyone knows a site with them in stock please let me know.

Yeah, it can be a real bitch. I used to help my mother do this when I was little. I want to let my wife have the chance to try it. I will probably be buying some seedlings though also to make her happy. I wouldn't mind some though to put up for a just in case situation with the other heirloom seeds I am storing.

I got some plants from Simmons Plant Farm http://www.simmonsplantfarm.com/index_files/Page524.htm
7.00 for 25. They came in around Jan 22. I left them in the bag until last week then put them in pots in my shop. Its about 57 degrees and they get some light during the day.
They are all sprouting new leaves! I am hoping to get a little jump on my spring planting!

Most varieties propagate by cuttings and I have never heard of the best types having seeds that breed true. (But it has been many years since I grew strawberries and things may have changed, or I might remember wrong.)

If they like your climate I think Fairfax are by far the most delicious. They are no good commercially because they don't ship well. For home gardens, who cares? They are smallish berries just exploding with not only sweetness, but strawberry flavor.

The reason that you do not see a lot of strawberry seeds is because they don't reproduce with any predictability. Better results are attained by growing from cuttings.

But, I am as adventurous as you are.... I'll try seeds at some point myself.

By runners, not cuttings. New crowns are formed by runners.
